Getting ready!

SO!  Thank goodness for free shipping and good sales!  I washed the cotton liner of Gerry’s toy box, and put it back in.  MAN did he have a lot of antlers he didn’t card much for. (They’re in the “to the shelter” box of items I’ve wanted to donate for a year, but could never bring myself to part with.  His toy box is still in the same spot, because, well, it fits!

I did online research this weekend and discovered this COOL new water bottle that has a lid that flips over to dispense water on walks. (No more Tupperware and water bottle in my walking pack!)  Blind dogs apparently like crinkly noised toys.  The lamb is also supposed to have a lavender scent to it, but I have essential oils to help with that as well.  Poop bags are ready, and tonight we set up the crate.  Today I buy her food and tomorrow I take a personal day and pick her up in the morning so we can have a day in the house together.  I have a hammock style back seat cover on order, as well as a collar from Orvis with the phrase “I”M BIND (my phone #) BOO” on it.  It glows in the dark as does the leash.  Believe me when I say I tried to only get the basics.  The foster mom is going to let me borrow her harness until I can find one that is similar….and….and I’ll be looking for a coat as it is cold, and WILL get colder.  I want to get a new dog stand for her eating bowls…I have the bowls, but threw away the stand as it was duct taped fixed once, and wasn’t so difficult to get rid of last fall.  Blankets are washed, and YOU know that once she’s here, I’ll think, “Why didn’t I get that,” in response to some other obvious thing I’m overlooking. Breathe….just breathe.

About danielle

I am a rescue mom and school teacher. Gerry came to me from Texas, after he "failed" as a hunting dog. He had NOT had an easy life. I was three years divorced, and we saved each other. Last week I learned he has osteosarcoma. Our world feels upside down...while everyone else is right side up.

I love to hear how excited, and dare I say happy? you sound for this new bundle of love!!
Gerry is smiling down from heaven, giving a high paw to everyone with him. We never forget our heart-dog, ever, but a new friend to love, who brings joy back into our lives, is priceless! I’m so happy for you (and Boo of course) that you have found each other, and can’t wait to share this journey.

I don’t know if this is of any help whatsoever, but since Thilo’s eyesight is not exactly good and will probably only get worse I read up on blind dogs a while back. One thing that stuck with me was that water fountains make sense apparently instead of a regular water bowl so they could hear where they have to go to drink (and eat). I also seem to remember something about using little bells on oneself so as not to “sneak up” on the dog but maybe that’s overdoing it.
I don’t know if this helps or even makes sense but I thought I’d share 🙂
    Enjoy the first days!!

      Tina,
Thank you so much. I will take any helpful hints and advice. I already purchased a “popular” (by the fact that it shows up on many sites) book “Living with a Blind Dog”. After this life experience, I’m going to write another one, “You Can Do It: Raising a Blind Puppy”. I will then send it to my family who are the ONLY people in my tiny world, that think I’ve made a Huge mistake, and after criticizing me and telling me I’ve made a mistake for myself and Boo….NOW are going to be ‘supportive’. Sighhhhhh, just in time for the holiday season!
Thank you for your kind words. I needed to read them.
