…round three next week

I am endlessly amazed at how well my boy is doing since his amputation and two rounds of chemo.  Has any one else heard about Apocaps?  It’s the medication that he is has to take three capsules of, an hour before he eats.  I’ve read positive things about the pills in the book the Dog Cancer survival guide.  I just wondered if anyone “out there” has heard if or used them.

Big question.  Should I have Gerry in a supportive harness with this frontal amputation?  I know I can ask my vet, but i want real people answers.  I’ve always massaged his back thighs, and have been continuing to do so, as I feel they have to be doing a lot more work than usual.  He hops and runs just fine on a leash, and I use a sling under his belly to get him out of the car, or off of the bed, but I am still wondering if he might need more.  Advice?  Wisdom?

No new pictures to post.  That last one was a winner!

About danielle

I am a rescue mom and school teacher. Gerry came to me from Texas, after he "failed" as a hunting dog. He had NOT had an easy life. I was three years divorced, and we saved each other. Last week I learned he has osteosarcoma. Our world feels upside down...while everyone else is right side up.

We used the Ruffwear Webmaster Plus harness for Otis, also a front leg amputee. He got around fine most of the time, but I liked using it for walks – it kept the lead up and away from his legs. The handle on back allowed me to gently assist him without any straps cutting into his body. I was also thinking ahead to a time when he might not be as mobile – no way I could carry a 100 pound dog! Check out the gear blog for more on harnesses, including photos in use.

I did get that harness. Originally it was for the trips to my parents where he has to go down a set of 12 steep steps. The harness works unbelievably well, as he is not bothered by it at all.

I love the Ruffwear harness from Webmaster (when we bought it for Murphy, they didn’t have the brush guard, which helps prevent it from slipping around on a front-leg). The handle on top lets me get him in & out of the car by myself one-handed … he weighs about 50lbs .. smaller than Gerry, but gives you an idea. We’ve been using it for 3 1/2 years and it’s held up great.
