Pizza Bones

After 27 years in the education system, I KNOW what we’re having for hot lunch on Friday.

Pizza.

It’s like some informal law, stemming from Catholicism, (I highly suspect).

Today, being Friday, also happened to be a “professional development” day in which students leave at 11:35, and then teachers get the pleasure of going to pointless meetings until 3:00.  When they go to lunch, I am to stay with them although I usually did anyway.

MONTHS ago,  I told them how I would save pizza crusts for Gerry, and called them ‘pizza bones’.  Today, when I ate with them, several students told me that when they eat the crust of their slice of pizza, they ‘toast’ Gerry by declaring that they’re eating it for him.  All of the bones in my body almost turned liquid.  I was stunned by their sentimentalism for me….as well as for Gerry, who they’ve only seen pictures and heard stories of this year.

It’s the nicest tribute to  my boy, ever.  Third graders.   Who would’ve thunk it?

About danielle

I am a rescue mom and school teacher. Gerry came to me from Texas, after he "failed" as a hunting dog. He had NOT had an easy life. I was three years divorced, and we saved each other. Last week I learned he has osteosarcoma. Our world feels upside down...while everyone else is right side up.

Kids are so smart and innocent at that age. Just gotta love that heart that we try to preserve.

Rose of Sharon is so beautiful. They green up later but bloom for so long. And the colors are breathtaking.

Lilac is pretty too but the bloom is so short lived. My favorite spring flower.

I love the pizza bones label. Not many pups don’t adore pizza bones 💕💖💕

    Hugs

Kids are smarter than adults Ever give them credit for.
I have loved 1st, 2nd, 5th, and now 3rd graders. They all have had an innocent compassion if I looked for it.
In fifth grade we always collected for animal shelters, and I’ m going to have my third graders end this year June with an event of collecting old towels, food, toys, etc… I have enough extra sheets and old towels that I can “Fluff the Pup”.
My students are in the situation where they don’t GIVE…they need to receive. I still believe it is a basic human instinct to give….This pet drive, is a small way they can give back to humanity, and I hope they are better adults for it.

The BEST part, is that my students live in 80% poverty, and a grant has given them healthier, homeade hot lunches, with salad and organic yogurt Every Day FOR FREE for breakfast and lunch. That they :toast” Gerry makes it bittersweet.

Oh Danielle, this just warms my heart! I don’t know how you held it together. Whata very special moment and what a very special way to reaffirm tonyou that Gerry DEFINITELY had an impact on those sweet little kids.

Amd then to know the background of yoir kids makes it all the more special. Make no mistake about it, you will be one of those rare teaxhers these kods will remember well into adulthood. You, and Gerry, a quite the gift!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful tribute to your boy

    Hugs
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS…. My apologies o Gerry! I think I called him Charlie in the previous blog!
